The often thrown around quote from Pablo Picasso, “Good artists copy. Great artists steal.” embodies what “streetwear” is (and really lets face it, this can be said for everything). No idea is original, no concept is one of a kind and no you weren’t the first person to wear loose/tight/skinny/baggy/flared/bedazzled [insert article of clothing here].

In the first installment of New Old Shit we’ll take a look a classic logo in streetwear (which actually started with skatewear). Take a look at the Esquire magazine cover below featuring Howard Stern:

Using a the classic Futura font it’s very clean and to the point, inspired perhaps from the censor bars used to block off the good bits. This cover came out in 1992, far before Stern had his multi-billion dollar satellite radio deal and still more of a NY presence. Take a walk with me to 1994 with the start of Supreme, a skate shop in NY that has grown to become something of staple in hip-hop and streetwear culture.

To date this is one of my favorite shirts they’ve come out with:

Ok so yeah they took a red box and used the same font, chances are Esquire probably wasn’t the first to do this either. Supreme was able to grow around this logo and make it it’s own and recently getting Lady Gaga to do their look book. That in itself is fucking amazing, this is a global music superstar after all.

This is my example of being a great artist, they stole someone’s original design and turned it into something that represents themselves in a much bigger way. Subsequently there’s been a few biters, some blatant some not so blatant. The worst seems to be these guys:
